We went to the church Grandpa Vandermeer was baptized at in Beetgumermolen. The entire service was in Frisian, which made things quite interesting.
Afterwards we walked over to the house of Grandpa's cousin and her husband, Jacoba and Jacobus Wassenaar. Thank goodness for their oldest son who speaks somewhat fluent English. This is their son's brand new house.
Delicious Sunday coffee and orange cake.
Grandpa and his cousin chatting it up at coffee...a bit confusing for the rest of us, but they seemed to have a great time together.
Their family owns a fertilizer transport company. Let's just say there was a lot of "fresh" air here.
We got to see some Frisian horses up close.
This was the house Grandpa lived in until he was 15. The family helped hide Jews here during the war.
For lunch Grandpa requested McDonald's. The meal was pretty traditional, but I did get a framboos schudden (raspberry shake) for dessert. My dad would have appreciated the taste of that shake.
Check out Ronald's bike.
Walking along the canals we found these musicians playing for a crowd.
We went to Albert Heijn for groceries. Apparently I'm taller than most of the people in Leeuwarden.
I jumped out of the van for these next few pictures while the drawbridge was up.
They collect the money for the drawbridge from the wooden shoe on the stick.
